
Recently Kenyan- American actor Edi Gathegi was in Kenya looking visit his family. While here, Gathegi also met with government officials and Kenyan actors to discuss future collaborative projects.
A boy of Eastlando
Edi Gathegi was born in Nairobi, Kenya on March 10, 1979. His family lived in Umoja for the first three years of his life. When his dad decided to pursue higher education abroad, they relocated to Albany, California, where he grew up. He remembers coming back a 16 and still reconnecting with the city and his old neighbourhood.
Hoop dreams deferred
Gathegi initially wanted to pursue a career in sports and played football and basketball in high school. When he injured his leg playing basketball at University, he took the downtime to join the theater program at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the rest is history. After graduating with a degree in theatre, he went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Famous NYU alumni include Marshahala Ali, Lady Gaga,Adam Sandler, Whoopi Goldberg, and Spike Lee among others.
Breakout roles
Gathegi’s breakthrough role came in 2007 when he played the character of Laurent in the hit movie “Twilight”. The film was a massive success and catapulted Gathegi into the limelight. He reprised his role in the sequel, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”, which was also a box office hit.
Following his success in the Twilight franchise, Gathegi landed a recurring role in the hit television series “House” as Dr. Jeffrey Cole. He also had a prominent role in the popular action-thriller “Gone Baby Gone” and appeared in the critically acclaimed film “X-Men: First Class” as Darwin.
Booked and busy
Gathegi has continued to make a name for himself in Hollywood with his captivating performances. He has appeared in a variety of movies and TV shows, including “The Blacklist”, “StartUp”, and “Pimp”. He has also made guest appearances on shows like “The Mentalist”, “CSI: Miami”, and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.
In addition to his work in film and television, Gathegi is also a talented stage actor. He has appeared in several stage productions, including “Othello”, “The Cherry Orchard”, and “As You Like It”.
Gathegi is not only a talented actor but also a humanitarian. He is an ambassador for the Enough Project, a nonprofit organization that works to end genocide and crimes against humanity in Africa. He has also been involved in several other charitable causes, including cancer research and HIV/AIDS prevention
