Can you still holiday on a budget? The Covid 19 pandemic has put a damper on grand vacation plans while at the same time causing a great deal of cabin fever. As holiday season rolls in— December in most African countries — here are some tips that can help you plan a pocket friendly trip.
Go local
Now that going beyond your borders might mean 2 weeks of quarantine, look closer home. You can get just as much bang for your buck in your city and it’s environs. Furthermore, you will be putting money back into the local tourist economy. Check out local fauna at NgareNdare forest or Cranes Haven in Kitale.
Go with family
Small family groups make more sense when planning a holiday on a budget especially during a pandemic. AirBnB and booking.com are great places to look for self catering places within your budget. For a little extra you can hire a cook to prepare lunch or dinner.
Go off the beaten path
Instead of heading to the most popular spots why not pick places that seem to fall under the radar when it comes to holiday destinations. Instead of Mombasa, try Kilifi. Instead of driving to Naivasha as per usual check out cheaper options in smaller towns, perfect for day trips or short stays.
Go off season
December is one of the busiest months in terms of travel in Kenya and high season in terms of tourism. why not book your holiday in January or February when things have quieted down. In Kenya the low season is between April and July. October, late January and February also boast lower rates than December.
Go camping
Camping is a great way to switch up your normal holiday plans and what’s more, kids love it. Whether you are into glamping or plain camping there is something for everyone. What’s more, it offers much more in terms of undiscovered scenery. Check out Suuby’s Camp and lodge in Machakos.
Go in early
Good planning and foresight are key to a stress free holiday. Plan ahead and book your tickets early. Most local flight companies offer cheaper rates for tickets booked earlier. Book your destination early by paying your deposit on time. And finally look into other modes of transport that can be cheaper than flying such as trains or bus services.
