Watch: Second Family

You may have been seeing billboards across the city and decided not to believe the hype. But, hear me out, if you haven’t watched Second Family on Showmax, it may be time to tune in. The show which is one of Showmax originals follows two Kenyan families that are thrust together after the death of the patriarch, who, it turns out, had two families, one in town and one in the village. At stake is a multi billion shilling business that the first family will not give up without a fight. The cast all do a brilliant job and actress Dora Nyaboke is particularly exquisite in her role of the sociopathic Evangeline Lang’at. Nick Ndeda, Stephanie Muchiri, Serah Wanjiru play her insufferable children while Vanessa Okeyo is Sinde, the forgotten daughter who suddenly finds herself at the helm of a conglomerate. Written by Mkamzee Mwatela and Anette Shadeya , Second Family was co-created Adam Neutzsky-Wulff and Edwin Kamau, directors of the Kalasha-nominated police drama series Crime and Justice,

In The Know: The Mama Simba’s of Samburu

The Mama Simba group from Sasaab village in Samburu are working tirelessly to help conserve lions by educating their community on wildlife conservation. They also plant grass to ensure both the herbivores and their own livestock have enough to eat thus helping preserve the delicate food chain. The number of lions across Africa has declined over the years with about 20,000 lions left on the continent and less that 2,500 in Kenya. Originally started by Mparasaroi Lemantaan and Munteli Lalparasaroi in 2013, Mama Simba’s see they efforts as a way to honour the Samburu belief that wildlife belongs to women.
